Start spreadin' the news

I'm leavin' today
I'm gonna BE a part of it
New York, New York

I can't believe I'm in NYC!! eeeeek!

We are at the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square. The hotel is great, and as a Gold HHonours member, I'm getting top treatment. They would not allow me to carry my own bags, and came into my room to turn on the lights. The velvet comforter is delish, and there is a flat screen TV. I have a fabulous view of 8th Ave. The number of taxis is amazing. In case you aren't familiar with the NYC street numbering system, Avenues run North/South, while numbered streets run East/West. This pic is looking south on 8th ave. We are right at the corner of 8th & 48th. Calling the hotel Garden Inn Times Square is a little misleading. Times Square is actually the intersection of 7th Ave with Broadway between 42nd and 49th. Tammy and I went immediately over and had a bite in the europa cafe. I was amazed by the closeness of it all. Buildings soar upward, lights are flashing everywhere and the 'beep beep' of taxis is constant. Speaking of taxis, we had a great ride in from the airport. The driver took us first through Harlem, then down Central Park's West Drive (see photo), where we saw the American Museum of Natural History, the Dakota Building (where John Lennon was shot), Tavern on the Green, ABC Studios on 66th (recently renamed Peter Jennings Way), the Juilliard School, Lincoln Center, and lots of big buildings. It was also then that we learned that a 'beep beep' from a taxi means "get out of my way because I'm not stopping". There was a bicyclist that was very brave ... now I understand the writings of Robin Cook regarding daredevil NYC bicyclist and medical examiner Jack Stapleton.

After dark, we walked over to Rockefeller Center, which looked much smaller in person than it does in the movies. We weren't hungry for dinner, but shopped at the nearby CVS for diet coke. Oh, and Tammy broke my bed. Just sitting on the edge and it collapsed. Good thing were weren't jumping on it!
